Off to Asia!

We left the KLM Crown Lounge and headed to our gate on the F pier, a short walk from our lounge. Again, the Flight guide from KLM was correct as the name on the aircraft was “Tierra del Fuego National Park”.

Upon arrival quite a number of passengers were not only in the waiting area but already standing in line, even though gate agents had not started boarding for those requiring assistance. The agents did do a fine job of finding those passengers requiring assistance and shuttling them into the waiting area right before the jetway. Soon enough, we were in line for boarding and it commenced on time.

Flight report of klm World Business Class AMS to KUL

KLM 809
Scheduled departure: 20:45
Scheduled arrival (CGK): 17:25 +1
Seats: 1H & K

At Schiphol airport, KLM had two jetways functioning for boarding the Boeing 777. We had the joy of taking the first jetway and were one of the first 4 people to arrive in business class. As we settled into our seats we were presented with pre-departure beverages, a new amenity kit, and menu for this flight’s food. As the wine menu was the same as our Toronto to Amsterdam flight, here are the pages that were different from the main menu:

I briefly talked with the senior purser on the flight explaining how this was our 40th birthday present to each other to go to Australia. The senior purser wished us well, thanked us for choosing KLM, and then smiled proudly “It’s my 40th too! This is my 40th year with KLM and as part of the celebration I was able to assist in selecting the cabin crew for the flight. I enjoy working with them.” What a great reward for 40 years of service, getting to pick of a crew of your friends to work with!

Once settled into our seats, the captain’s message informed us of our expected 11.5 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur. He then added that based on the duration of the flight 3 flight crew (pilots) are on board and that we should not be concerned if we see any flight crew walking about the cabin during the flight.

With cargo, baggage and the passengers all on board, our flight was ready for a timely departure. We taxied to our runway and departed from Schiphol airport.

By this time I was tired. As in, I fell asleep quickly. I was so tired that I fell asleep between each item during meal service. Hot towel, sleep. We had the option of mixed nuts or cheese with our drink before Appetizers.  Then sleep.

Appetizer, and then more sleep. Main course? Sleep right after it. My ability to fall asleep sitting up was also assisted by the almost constant turbulence. We’re not talking about white-knuckle, roller coaster, instead imagine you’re in a vehicle driving down a country road where the gravel and small holes giving the vehicle a rocking motion. For me, having had a few hours of sleep, this rocking on the plane put me to sleep. The single best part of the meal was dessert – I selected the Leonidas vanilla ice cream. It had pieces of chocolate in it and was absolutely amazing.

On my trip to the bathroom, I couldn’t help but to take a picture of the wallpaper, as KLM does enjoy showing off their Delft houses. I thought it was a nice touch, instead of having the KLM logo plastered all over the wall.

After returning from the bathroom, Amber had selected my milk chocolate canal style house after dinner treat for me to enjoy. In all, the meal service was completed within 3 hours of take-off. With dinner completed, I reclined the seat and quickly fell asleep.

Seat maps & Seatguru

Seat maps from airlines are straight forward to give you an idea of where you are seated on the plane. Seatguru and other websites attempt to supplement this with additional information such as misaligned windows to a particular row, proximity to bathrooms, or seats with extra space. Accuracy can vary.  Seatguru almost universally applying the same logic without consideration. It states that our seats might not be desirable due to their proximity to the bathroom. I disagree. KLM’s 777-300 aircraft have two lavatories for business class passengers, with one directly in front of our seats, and the other in front of row 6 on the left side of the plane. With the combination of noise cancelling headphones, being exhausted, I will concede I could faintly hear the toilet flush while having headphones on. Other than that, I didn’t get bumped nor noticed unusually business foot traffic being close to the lavatory. Amber never noticed any noise from the toilet.

Breakfast

I had a good sleep. Then again if you’ve had less than 3 hours of sleep, any amount of sleep will feel good. For me I almost had 7 hours of sleep in total. I felt on top of the world. I woke up, and breakfast service began shortly after, approximately 90 minutes out from landing. The breakfast was satisfying, however I felt the boiled egg was more filling than the egg roll. Regardless, with two eggs in me along with a croissant, I was ready for our stopover in Kuala Lumpur. As our destination was Jakarta we did not get to select houses before the Kuala Lumpur landing (spoiler we did select houses before landing in Jakarta). Our approach was smooth where it had the plane fly by KLIA followed by a turn, and final approach for a smooth touch-down to the airport.

As we taxied to the gate we received some information as transit passengers…
