2023.10 Edinburgh and London (Part 5)

This post highlights some of the food we had during our visit to Scotland’s capital.  Little Miss certainly selected some great spots for us to dine at.

Makars Mash Bar

Once Little Miss found a place where mashed potatoes get top billing on the menu we had to check it out.  Located just off the Golden Mile on Bank Street, we arrived just as the lunch rush was coming to an end.  Once seated, the food was worth the hype.

Seriously though, the meal was excellent.  The mashed potatoes were just awesome.  Highly recommend visiting!

Tigerlily – Afternoon Tea

Little Miss did some research and decided on Tigerlily to have afternoon tea.  Not only is Tigerlily a restaurant and bar, but also a hotel.  Located on George Street, it’s easy to find.  When you enter the decor in sections stand out!

If you plan to have afternoon tea, an advance booking is required.  For us, we booked our visit for the next day.  Again, a weekday in October helped to avoid massive crowds.

Once seated, afternoon tea was solid.  Sandwiches were good, scones were fresh, but the stand out were the treats.  We commented to the waitress how much we enjoyed the dessert.  She then returned with the pastry chef who confirmed all the desserts for afternoon tea are made fresh each day.  We told him the one dessert we liked the most and said “We’ll be back tomorrow to have them as a stand alone dessert!”

Once again our approach of “if you like it, return the next day!” and we did exactly that.  We returned the next day for lunch.

Tigerlily

Their lunch menu was just as good as their afternoon tea.  We made sure to have our dessert and it was just as tasty as yesterday.

We even lucked out and had the same waitress too!  From the picture below, the the ceiling mounted speakers, this place must a quasi-nightclub on weekend evenings.

Fortunately for us, visiting the middle of the week, it was much quieter.

St. James Quarter

Just past the east end of George St., and St. Andrew Square is an open air multi-level mall.  We ended up in their food court, err, “Scottish Marketplace”.

After doing a double take of what was on tap, I had to take a picture of it.  I only thought beer or cider is available on draft!

After walking past each booth at least twice, we finally decided on having fish and chips from Creel Caught.  The person taking our order had such a thick accent Little Miss needed him to repeat himself three times.  And then I translated for her, as I figured out what he was saying the second time he said it.

From there we walked around doing some window shopping.  Instead of a Starbucks, we came across a Hot Chocolate cafe, somehow I didn’t take a picture of the other half of the store that had plenty of chocolate bars and other confections available for sale.

Those are the food related highlights from our time in Edinburgh.
