2024.01 Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Grand Cayman (Part 6)

Time for Aruba!  Now to mix up the next ports of call — the ship didn’t stop in alphabetical order, instead we stopped at Curacao first, then Aruba, and last was Bonaire.  With the short distance between islands, this allowed us to have a late evening departure form Curacao, and then already be in Aruba by the time we woke up and got moving for the day.

Butterfly Farm

For today’s excursion there were three main stops, with the first being the Butterfly Farm.  We arrived just as a morning cloud finished a short rain shower.  During our tour of the property, the recent rain seemed to invigorate the butterflies as we had no shortage of opportunities to get up close to the many types of butterflies that they had.  On a few occasions the butterflies selected somebody form the tour group’s hat as a temporary perch.  It was calming to be able to see so many different butterflies.

Island Tour

Our bus then took us out to the eastern side of the island where the constant wind and waves, have created a wind swept arid landscape.  We stopped at a location that has a natural bridge — however erosion from the constant waves had made it and the surrounding area unsafe to get too close to it.

After departing the eastern side of the island our tour stopped at a beach, where we were able to go for a quick swim in the ocean.  The light rain while we swam didn’t change anything, instead it just made us stay in the water until the rain stopped before returning to the bus for its return to the port.

Due to the combination of the heat, and it being lunch time, we chose to return to the ship and not explore any other parts of the town. At least from the buffet we had a good view of the immediate area of the port.

It’s hard to miss that this is the most tourist oriented island, with multiple hotels and casinos along the oceanfront, and western fast food chains are easy to find here.
