DAILY UPDATE #33 – AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND 2018

Guess what?

We did something that was #2 or #3 on Amber’s list today.  As we are in the Sydney area we made the short drive north to visit the Australian Reptile Park.  (Spoiler:  It’s cool!)

Where’s the highway?

The park is just over an hour away from downtown Sydney.  The journey was odd as we were on a highway, crossed the Sydney harbour and not a minute later we were crawling through main streets at 60 km/h.  Then after what felt like an eternity (probably 10 minutes), a highway magically appeared and off we went, effortlessly to the park.  Why does Sydney not have highways that actually connect to other highways?

After we arrived at the park, both of us looked at Google maps, and it too confirmed that the M1 crosses the harbour, disappears, and then re-appears many kms to the north.  This portion of the drive was even more fun as we drove through when the school zones were active.  Speed limit?  40 km/h.  I stopped counting after the eighth zone.

Australian Reptile Park

This cool park offers many things.  It has many similar creatures that we’ve seen throughout our trip.  The highlight though, were the two shows we watched, feeding of the Galapagos tortoise, and the main reptile show.  Feeding of their very large salt water crocodile, Elvis, only occurs on weekends.  We saw him, and he was big.

The reptile show was neat as the person running the show, Ranger Mick, did an excellent job introducing the many animals (lizards, alligator, python and a few more) and as he has been the handler for so long had many of the animals very calm and relaxed on him, even the alligator.

Instead of anything lengthy, here is a very short summary of what we saw:

Tasmanian Devil

Koala Bear
Echidna!

We returned to Sydney without issue, went to an Italian restaurant around the corner from our hotel, and it was amazing.  Absolutely amazing.  More in our full post.  Tomorrow sadly will be our last full day in Australia.  No teasers on what we are going to do.
