2018 – Part 21 – Hotel Review of Best Western – Melbourne Airport

As I didn’t want to drive through downtown Melbourne to the airport for a Monday morning flight, we stayed at a hotel close to the airport.  This was a hotel that provided us everything we needed for our one night stay.

Layout

As this is a motel there were many buildings spread out across the property.  Once I found a parking spot, I walked back to the main building that had reception and the restaurant, and checked-in.

Check-in

Arriving in the middle of the afternoon had us as the only guests checking-in.  Check-in was fast and efficient and staff helped answer my questions about the shuttle, and arrange for parking.  Parking at the hotel is significantly cheaper than at or near the airport and this eliminated the need to spend time tomorrow morning to find parking at the airport.  With room keys in hand, I returned to the car, collected our things and we proceeded to the room.

Room

Our room was located in the large building that had the convention/meeting space on the top floor.  Our room was the level underneath, with a second level of rooms below ours:

We were given a king + single room.  The room had a small balcony, however we didn’t use it.  As you can see from the pictures, the room was large, providing plenty of space for us to repack our items for our 3 day trip to Tasmania.

bathroom

The water pressure in the shower was okay, the enclosure was on the small side but still wasn’t as small as the tiniest shower enclosure we had in a London, England hotel room where I barely fit.  A useful feature of this bathroom was that there was a switch that left a few LED lights over the vanity, they functioned as a night light.

Amenities

I did walk part of the property, where I found the outdoor pool (Sorry I forgot to take a picture).  Above us, in the entrance area of the convention & meeting room space was the business area.  Here I was able to check-in and print out board passes for not just our outbound flight to Hobart, but also the return flight.  This was the first time that I had the ability to check-in for a flight more than 24 hours ahead of its scheduled departure.

Business area

In the morning we didn’t have breakfast at the hotel, instead we planned to use the time between security and boarding at the airport to grab something to eat.

The convention space on the Sunday was being used by a group, and they seemed to celebrate into the night as we spotted some remains of their party the next morning:

Airport Shuttle

This complimentary service was great.  Our morning shuttle was filled to capacity — make sure to arrange a time when you check-in.  Drop-off & pick-up is in the same spot, and services all terminals at Melbourne International Airport.  This area is common for all shuttles and is well marked.  You’ll need a phone to call the hotel to request pick-up.  For us, calling while we walked through terminal 4 minimized the amount of waiting time at the pick-up area.

Finally, we had no issues with leaving our car during our few days in Tasmania.

Overall

The hotel was good.  The room was clean, close to the airport as we wanted, and allowed us to relax.  We spent our evening rearranging items in our luggage for our carry-on only mini-trip to Tasmania.  Having a day where we didn’t even cover 50 km was great after all the driving we had done over the past few days.
