DAILY UPDATE #10 – AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND 2018

Scenic Drive in Tasmania

We took a scenic route to Launceston today and it was scenic. That’s an understatement.  It was spectacular.  Vistas that I hope to remember for a long time.  And the roads!  I felt as if I was participating in the Targa Tasmania in some sections.  That’s a great feeling until the sun falls below the horizon.

Great Eastern Drive

I wanted to explore some of Tasmania on our drive to Launceston. The Great Eastern Drive is a straightforward route from Hobart that ends up following the eastern coast of Tasmania, before turning west and taking you to Launceston.  The route was scenic, and for me it didn’t require Amber running Google Maps for directions.

St Columba Falls

This waterfall is one of the closest waterfalls along our route. Amber had found many larger waterfalls on the western side of the island, however with each requiring up to 2 hour hikes to view, each way.  Those were quickly eliminated.  This majestic waterfall is one of the highest on the island and you can hear the waterfall from the car park.  It was a close walk and just splendid up close.

how hard is 138 km?

From St. Columba Falls to Launceston is a mere 138 km.  Google maps gives you an indication that it’s not flat farmland that’ll you cross as over 2 hours comes up as the travel time.  Once the sunset, it felt like the travel time would double.  Navigating low-speed hairpin & 180 degree switchbacks during the day is one thing, try doing it at night.  And it’s cloudy, and there is mist in parts.  We took a little longer and both of us celebrated with a drink with dinner once we arrive at our hotel.  I’ll compile video when time allows.

Tomorrow is Anzac Day, and a much easier return route to Hobart.
