After a quick overnight near London Heathrow our first stop was Canterbury and Dover. In Dover we wanted to explore the iconic castle watching over the Channel, and in Canterbury, the historic cathedral home to the Church of England. Our home for three nights was in Canterbury at the Best Western Abbots.

There are so many hotels in London, selecting one could be an overwhelming experience. Our choice was the combination of; a central location, and a Hilton property, because we could use Hilton’s loyalty benefit of staying five nights and using the point cost of four nights. Without needing an indoor pool, and wanting to be close to an underground station, I selected the Conrad London St. James.
Our hotel for our five night stay in Edinburgh was the Bruntsfield Hotel. Just a short bus ride from Royal mile, it was a great choice in hotel for our stay that was close to central Edinburgh, but being just a short bus ride away. Excellent food, decent sized room, it’s an excellent option when visiting Edinburgh.
Why didn’t we stay with relatives when we visited them? Simple, a lack of space (not everybody has spare rooms waiting for visitors), and they had a young one who was dictating their hours and lack of sleep. We gladly gave them space and I chose a straight-forward hotel for our stay, a Hampton Inn in San Jose.
